Coldstream

The district of Coldstream covers a total land area of 67.25 km, east of Vernon, British Columbia. The small city was incorporated in 1906. It comprises the North end of Kalamalka Lake and extends through the beautiful Coldstream valley. Because the area was incorporated on the 21st of December, 1906 its centennial was celebrated during 2006.

The municipality of Coldstream is situated directly southeast of Vernon. It is considered a part of the Greater Vernon region. The town of Coldstream is the place of the headquarters and a member municipality of the Regional District of the North Okanagan.

There are a lot of beaches, parks, and fantastic hiking trails within the Coldstream Valley, which travels east through lands for agriculture, through rolling hills all the way to the small community of Lavington. Among the most famous destinations is Kalamalka Provincial Park. For cycling aficionados, there are interesting back roads and enough byways to explore. The many boat launches provide an opportunity for adventure on Kalamalka Lake.

The Coldstream Ranch was established by Captain Charles Frederick Houghton during 1863. He transferred the ranch to Charles Albert Vernon and Forbes G. During 1891, it was acquired by John Hamilton-Gordon, who was the 1st Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair. He became Canada's future Governor General from the years 1893 to 1898. Coldstream Ranch was purchased in the year 1994 by its existing owners and still continues to be a working cattle ranch.

Greater Vernon was at first known for its agriculture and forestry economies. More recently, manufacturing and retail trade have become the main industries.

School district 22 looks after the Coldstream Schools, that comprise: the Coldstream Elementary School, Kidston Elementary School and Kalamalka Secondary School. The Okanagan College campus in Vernon serves the municipality as well.

Kal Beach on the shores of Kalamalka Lake is amongst Coldstream and region's most famous beaches. There are other smaller beaches in the region which are also popular including Cosens Beach, Kirkland Beach, Tamarak Beach, Long Lake Beach, Cliff Beach, Sovereign Beach, Juniper Beach, Pebble Beach and Jade Bay Beach.

The Kalamalka Provincial Park borders the town of Coldstream. This particular park comprises several natural places together with many scenic views and groomed hiking trails. Wild animals in the region include black bear, marmot, rattlesnakes and white tailed deer. There are various bird species who also call the area home.

The North Okanagan region is fantastic place to participate in recreational activities because of its hot and sunny summers, warm springs and temperate and mild autumns. It is a well-known tourist spot and those who are fortunate enough to call the area home can enjoy the outdoors every day of the year.
