False Creek

In the heart of Vancouver City lies a short inlet referred to as False Creek, separating the rest of the city from downtown. False Creek was named by George Henry Richards during his Hydrographic survey of 1856 to 1863. There are several bridges which span False Creek including Granville Street and Cambie Street Bridges and the Burrard Street Bridge. The Burrard Street Bridge crosses the western end and Science World is found at the eastern end.

False Creek is one of the 4 major bodies of water that border Vancouver together with the Burrard Inlet, the Fraser River and the English Bay. It has become an extremely popular boating spot utilized for a variety of different activities including public ferries, canoeing, dragon boating, kayaking, visiting pleasure boats and charter ships. False Creek has 10 different marinas with berths to accommodate 1500 watercraft and several paddling clubs and boat rental facilities. Numerous padding events along with the Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival have been located at this particular place since the year 1986.

During the 2010 Paralympics and Olympic Winter Games, Southeast False Creek was the location of the Vancouver Olympic Village. This site was constructed on the last remaining big tract of waterfront land which was undeveloped close to downtown Vancouver.

Southeast False Creek has become a home for as much as 16,000 individuals since the 2010 Winter Games. It is home to a 45,000 square foot community centre. The future developments comprise a public plaza, an elementary school, a community garden and different child care centres amongst other things.
