Marpole

Marpole

Marpole is a mostly residential district situated on the southern edge of Vancouver City, B.C. Marpole has about 22,400 residents and is located directly northeast of Vancouver International Airport. It is surrounded by Angus Drive towards the west, 57th Avenue towards the north, Main Street towards the east and the Fraser River towards the south. In the past century, Marpole has undergone numerous changes. There has been a huge increase in traffic with the development and construction connected with the Oak Street Bridge, which leads to the southern suburbs and Hwy 99 and the Arthur Laing Bridge which leads to the International Airport of Vancouver.

As part of the city of Vancouver, Marpole is considered to be among the oldest communities. There has been evidence of settlements found within the area that date as far back as 3500 B.C. In the 1860s the area was first occupied by non-natives. The area existed as a separate village and was initially referred to as Eburne Station. It was separated from the city by miles of forest.

Within Marpole, the majority of the shops and stores could be located along the south end of Granville Street. There are small corner shops of Oak Street and 67th Avenue as well as on 57th Avenue and Cambie Street. There are several drive-thru fast food restaurants, big box stores and different distributors and manufacturers situated along Marine Drive that runs east of the Arthur Laing Bridge. Along the banks of the Fraser River there are more heavy-industry kinds of businesses.

The Wild Coyote nightclub is located just west on the Arthur Laing Bridge, under the Hudson Street on-ramp. Local venues comprise a live community theatre called the Metro Theatre and the Fraser Arms Hotel are other local venues. Just west of the Fraser Arm is the Great Marpole Midden.

Among the current proposals in place is for the development of commercial and retail rental buildings and condominiums surrounding Marine Drive Station on the Canada Line. This development will be called the Marine Gateway.
