Port Moody

Port Moody is a small city situated within Metro Vancouver. This semi-circular city is situated at the east end of the Burrard Inlet within British Columbia. The Tri-Cities comprise Port Moody, which is the smallest, bordered by Coquitlam on the south and the east and Burnaby on the west. The rough Coast Mountains along with the villages of Belcarra and Anmore are situated to the north and northwest. Port Moody was named after Richard Moody.

According to the latest 2006 Census has shown that the city of Port Moody has 10,125 private dwellings with 27,512 inhabitants. Ever since the last Census in 2001, there was a 15% increase in population growth. There has been major housing construction that can account for a part of this population boom. Within the area, there are 8,015 residential houses which are owned and 2,115 which are rented. Port Moody has the fourth highest municipal median family income coming in at $70,239. The largest employers within Port Moody are Eagle Ridge Hospital and School District 43.

The city has in place a Stream Stewardship Program to be able to help protect the over 41 streams flowing through Port Moody to Burrard Inlet. This particular program helps to manage the urban streams, the stream vegetation and the watersheds by helping to support the growth of insect life and fish. The PMES is the Port Moody Ecological Society. They are a not-for-profit group that works with the city to be able to promote ecological awareness within the area. The Port Moody Ecological Society volunteers operate a trout and salmon hatchery; provide public awareness and community outreach programs, as well as operate a water quality lab.

Since the year 1988, City Hall within Port Moody has proudly been pesticide free after banning pesticide use altogether. Port Moody provides annual seminars at its Inlet Theatre to be able to teach individuals how to garden naturally.

Port Moody city has been given numerous provincial, national and international awards. During the year 2004, Port Moody was honored with a prestigious award from the UN sponsored International Award for "Liveable Communities" in the category of "Planning for the Future." For cities of the same size category, the city of Port Moody respectively won third place overall.

The city of Port Moody was highlighted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business in 2008 for being the most fiscally responsible amongst British Columbia's 28 biggest cities.
