Kerrisdale

Kerrisdale is a suburban district situated in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia. It features a variety of older bungalows and newer homes as well as several low and mid-rise condo apartment type buildings.

Kerrisdale is home to an ethnic mix of Asian and Caucasian Canadians. Along West 41st avenue, between Maple and Larch Streets, is a shopping district. More shopping is situated between West Boulevard and 37th and 47th.

The northern region of Marpole is normally thought of as part of Kerrisdale, and several even refer to the area as Kerrisdale-Marpole. The Southlands is the portion of Kerrisdale which is located within the southwestern area due to its location in relation to the city. The Southlands area is known for the abundance of horse stables and its rural feel. It is located on the floodplain on the North Arm of the Fraser River.

Kerrisdale was named in 1905 when B.C. Electric Railway manager R.H. Sterling asked Mrs. William McKinnon to name the interurban stop which is currently West 41st Avenue and during the time was Wilson road. Mrs. McKinnon called it "Kerry's Dale," named after her family home in Kerrydale, Gairloch, Scotland. Kerrydale translates to "little seat of the fairies." In a short time, it was known as Kerrisdale.

This area was part of town was considered part of the Municipality of Point Grey, amalgamated January 1, the year 1992, along with the Municipality of South Vancouver and the City of Vancouver. Various avenues and streets surrounding this focal crossroads became developed during this time. Certain local landmarks like for instance Point Grey Secondary School, Ryerson Church, Shannon Mews and the Allen Brown Estate were built in these formative years.
