Burrard Street

Burrard Street is located within Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This main road is the central street of Downtown Vancouver and the Financial District. Burrard Street derived its name from Burrard Inlet that is located at its northern terminus. This particular inlet took its name from Sir Harry Burrard-Neale.

Burrard Street begins at Canada Place that is close to the Burrard Inlet. It then runs southwest through downtown Vancouver. Burrard Street crosses False Creek via the Burrard Bridge. The street extends south of False Creek on what used to be known as Cedar Street prior to the construction of the bridge in 1932. Burrard Street extends due south until its junction with West 16th avenue.

The intersection of Georgia Street with Burrard Street is considered to be the center point of Downtown Vancouver. Located a few blocks south is one more popular junction between Burrard Street and Robson Street. This is an upscale shopping placewhich is tourist orientated. The Financial District is due northeast of the centre. Further down, closer to Vancouver Harbour is the historic Marine Building. This building opened during 1930 and is considered to be an Art Deco masterwork. It was built two years before the Art Deco pylons that built the Burrard Bridge found at the street's opposite end. Canada Place and the Vancouver Convention Centre are likewise situated at the Harbour.

The Burrard Bridge is usually referred to as the Burrard Street Bridge. This steel truss, Art Deco Style bridge was constructed in the years 1930 to 1932. It has 5 lanes. This five part, high bridge is constructed on 4 piers and spans False Creek. The bridge connects Kitsilano with downtown Vancouver via connections to Burrard Street on both sides. The Burrard Bridge is amongst three bridges crossing False Creek.

The other two bridges are the Cambie Street Bridge, situated 1.2 miles or 2 kms or about 11 blocks to the east and the Granville Bridge which is around 3 blocks or 0.5 km or 0.31 miles to the southeast. The Burrard Bridge consists of the vehicle deck together with sidewalks on both sides. The sidewalks are 8 feet, 6 inches wide or 2.6 meters. The northern sidewalk has a view of West Vancouver and English Bay for people who are walking and the southern one has a view of False Creek and is currently dedicated to cyclists.
