In 1958, the Dunbar Community Center was founded. It was brought about through a local improvement by-law initiative. In this particular plan, the locale people agreed to directly finance original building costs. The Dunbar Community Center is a busy establishment which is situated on Memorial Park West which is a large greensward bounded by playgrounds, playfields, a lot of shade trees and a group of 6 tennis courts.
Initially, the park was referred to as Dunbar Park. After WWI, the name was changed to Memorial Park. After the merger of South Vancouver Municipalities along with West Point Grey the "West" was included onto the park's name because the City of Vancouver already had an existing park with the same name.
The community centre is situated near the corner of Dunbar Street and West 33rd Avenue. This site was selected because it was really close to the bustling Dunbar shopping neighborhood. The centre is available to community members of whatever age and the centre serves as a multi-cultural residential space. A diverse range of recreational programs and activities are existing here including seasonal special events and outdoor lawn bowling. Through a joint Community Centre Association and Park Board initiative, the really active fitness centre of Dunbar was recently expanded.
