Fairview

Fairview

Fairview is a neighborhood situated on Vancouver's west side, British Columbia. It extends to to False Creek in the north, Cambie Street in the east, to Burrard Street in the west and from 16th Avenue in the south.

Fairview was initially a rich rain forest area location in the Vancouver. Until the opening of the Hastings Mills and Moodyville on Burrard Inlet during the 1860's, the area was full of gigantic timber and wildlife. This green paradise became one of the very first places to be logged.

Fairview was amongst the CPR land grants in the city. The area remained mostly undeveloped until the expansion of the city outside the Burrard Peninsula with the new electric railway system built during the 1890s.

The original streetcars in the city included the Granville and Cambie lines which ran along Broadway Street. Also, there was a line called the Fairview Loop, which ran in both directions from downtown up Main Street to Broadway, then making its way to Granville and back into the downtown core. This consistent transportation and easy access led to fast development of the residential and commercial areas in the neighborhood.

The part which lies north of Broadway has an excellent view of the downtown city core and the North Shore Mountains, thus Fairview derived its name. There are also some city offices which are situated across Cambie Street from Vancouver City Hall, located on Fairview's eastern fringe.
