Vernon is a city found within the south-central area of British Columbia, Canada. The city was named after the Forbes George Vernon, who was a former MLA of BC. He helped establish the famed Coldstream Ranch. On December 30, 1892, Vernon city was incorporated. In the area referred to as Greater Vernon, or the metropolitan region, the population is 55,418, whilst Vernon city has a population of 35,944. Individuals who reside here are referred to as "Vernonites."
Vernon city is popular for its lakes and its beaches in summertime and its skiing and its hockey during wintertime. It is considered a year-round tourist place. Numerous individuals from Calgary and Vancouver rely on it as a weekend get-away. Amongst the major summer events that Vernon hosts is a huge Slo-Pitch tournament.
As one of various golf courses in the area, Predator Ridge Resort boasts a 36-hole community and golf resort, that have received a top 25 rated golf courses by Score Magazine. It is amongst only two Western Canadian golf courses to receive that high of a rating over the past 8 years. Predator Ridge has proudly hosted the Skins Game two times. The first time was during the year 2000 and featured Sergio Garcia, Fred Couples, Mike Weir and Phil Mickelson. During the year 2008, the course held the event once more and Mike Weir, Camilo Villegas, Colin Montgomerie, Fred Couple and Greg Norman graced the course. A new Fred Couples Signature course is currently open. It is referred to as "The Rise" and it showcases unsurpassed views of Vernon itself together with views of the Okanagan Lake.
Skiing is one of the most popular winter sports in Vernon. There are two major ski locations there. They are Silverstar Mountain Resort and Sovereign Lake Nordic Club. Silver Star is recognized as amongst the top ski resorts within North America. It has a large cross-country skiing area which hosted a 1991 FIS Cross-Country World Cup event. Sovereign Lake is known for over 50 km of skiing terrain. It is considered a premier cross-country skiing spot. As the host of a 2005 FIS Cross-Country World Cup event, this Nordic Club gained worldwide exposure.
Curling is one more popular sport in the city of Vernon. The local Vernon Curling Club has many curlers participating frequently. Before, the city has hosted different major national curling events including the 1979 Canadian Senior Women's Curling Championship and the 1992 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. In the year 2004, the Canadian Senior Curling Championships was also held. During the year 2008, the very first international event was the Ford Women's Curling Championship which was held at the Vernon Multiplex.
Tennis is one more popular sport within the city of Vernon. The city is home to numerous picturesque courts with amazing views. In the month of October the year 2008, the Vernon Tennis Association was started. Its focus was to bring together all tennis players of various skill levels in the Vernon area in order to offer both social and competitive programs which were not being presently provided to player. Currently, the VTA operates classes 15 hours a week in collaboration with Greater Vernon Parks, Recreation and Culture.
