The small city of Pitt Meadows is situated within southwestern British Columbia. Pitt Meadows was incorporated in the year 1914, and now presently has an approximate population of 17,500, covering 85.38 square kilometers. Pitt River is located towards the west of Pitt Meadows, and links the Fraser river with Pitt Lake, which is the planet's largest fresh water tidal lake. A delta has formed where Pitt River connects to the lake because of it's backwards flow during high tide. As a result of its proximity to several rivers and it's low-lying ground, Pitt Meadows is a flood plain town. A huge wildlife refuge is situated within a peat bog in the northern sector of the flood plain. To the East of the city of Pitt Meadows is Maple Ridge and past Pitt River, towards the West, is the city of Port Coquitlam.
Both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are considered to be two of the quickest growing communities within the Lower Mainland. It provides a picturesque rural setting whilst still being close to a big, urban metropolis. The city of Pitt Meadows is well-known for its specialty crops of fruit, like raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and cranberries. A commercial fishery is supported by the Fraser River and the region's forest products are utilized as a major resource.
Most of the lands within the city of Pitt Meadows are residential, with upwards of 85% of the population commuting to work outside of the city of Pitt Meadows. Health Food and Beverage, Primary Education, Accommodation and Construction are the major employment sectors within the city.
A new shopping centre was just developed on the border of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. Various large businesses now rent retail space at this place, like for example: Michaels, a Real Canadian Superstore, Jysk/Winners/Homesense, Telus, EB Games, Bell, Tim Hortons,a La Vie En Rose and Cineplex. Even with the recent additions of some commercial buildings, 86% of the landmass within Pitt Meadows is located within British Columbia's Agricultural Land Reserve.
There are some greenhouses situated in Pitt Meadows which grow cut flowers along with specialty peppers. Other important agricultural goods comprise blueberries and cranberries.
The peaceful pastoral town of Maple Ridge is located close by on Fraser River's north bank. The history of Maple Ridge has been well preserved and the city of Pitt Meadows proudly displays it's rich heritage of First Nations and pioneer history within the Maple Ridge Museum and Archives.
The city of Port Coquitlam is centered in the Lower Mainland Region and provides quality living with a terrific setting. It's convenient centre location gives it a small town appeal while maintaining big city connections.
