The town of Ladner is part of the Municipality of Delta and is part of Metro Vancouver. The town was created along the Fraser River banks as a fishing village. Situated on Highway 17, it lies in the extreme southwest corner of the British Columbia mainland, 27 km south of Vancouver and 27 km west of Peach Arch and the White Rock border crossing. Tsawwassen is the closest community and this is where the ferry terminal is situated for service to the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island.
Ladner was named for William and Thomas Ladner. They were brothers who arrived in the area in 1868 and started large fishing and farming operations. The site allowed the area to develop as a center for these operations. Access across the river to Richmond was allowed by the ferry at Captain's Cove and the George Massey Tunnel brought a permanent connection in the year 1959.
The unofficial area referred to as South Delta is made up by Ladner and its suburban neighbor towards the south, Tsawwassen.
Each spring, the town hosts the Ladner Pioneer May Days, that the people call May Days. This festival started in the year 1896, and is the longest presently running festival in the Delta area. It is held on the weekend after the holiday commemorating Queen Victoria's birthday. Amongst the yearly events include a carnival, a parade and many other events.
The Ladner Village Market happens every other Sunday throughout the summer months on major streets. This is a farmer's market featuring fresh local produce, homemade crafts and arts, entertainment, food and live music. Vendors from as far away as Vancouver Island and Kelowna, together with various local artisans and farmers set up stalls to sell hand crafted and locally grown products. This market has become really well known in the community and draws many out of town visitors every market day.
Delta and Ladner hosted Delta Rivermania in the month of September 2008 to play hommage to the 200th anniversary of Simon Fraser's journey down the Fraser River. This weekend event ran from September 26 to 28. Amongst the events included a pancake breakfast, theatrical performances, street entertainment, midnight markets and clam chowder cook-off. The Delta Rivermania was part of the British Columbia 150 celebrations.
